As the CEO of Rycore Records, Pockets the Mastermind, dropped his latest “Bad Year” project, he simultaneously proves that there is talent in the East Coast outside of New York. Likewise, that the Manchester-state is on the rise. “Bad Year” is an eight-track opus highlighting the trials and tribulations of Pockets’s 2017. Over a fitting blend of radical, boom-bap to trunk-thumping, energetic trap, Pockets unhinges a monster of lyricism and flow. Not only does he demonstrate the ability to create an enthralling album; but that the songs within it can be just as infectious. “Bad Year” is the ideal album for a riotous, mosh-worthy performance. Let Rycore do its thing, and 2019 will be the exact opposite of his title.

To turn up your next party, with a through-the-roof banger, Chang$ has dropped “Do You Believe Me Now”. It is the ATLien’s debut single, aimed to rocket him into an energetic 2019. “Do You Believe Me Now” commences with a melodic jumble of ad-libs, buoyed atop bubbling synths and ominous atmospherics. The pound of a distorted 808 pushes his vocals into the mix; and when the beat is paired with his rhythmic flow, a contagious bounce ensues. Obviously, Chang$ is well-versed in the art of making a hit; seeing as “Do You Believe Me Now” sports all the elements of a promising trap smash. Its bodacious beat, infectious flow, and exciting chorus makes the Decatur, Georgia record a promising New Year slam. It is swift and satisfying; perfect for your local house party or nightclub mix. G Pea’s phenomenal, new opus “Glass House”, is opened with a poignant spoken word. Shrouded by a miscellaneous cacophony of noises, the rapper ushers us into the concept of his project. In a solemn, yet creative code, he speaks on the state of living in 21st century society; drawing countless parallels to “living in a glass house”. As moving as his soliloquy is, this ten-track album was seething for a sonic entrance to the glass abode; and G Pea provides one with the thunderous “Doors”. It is a magnetic trap banger, riddled with insightful jewels from G Pea’s own experiences and perspectives. Likewise, it cements the bases for much of the project’s sound. Tracks such as “WIFI”, the impactful single “Fishin”, “Progress”, and “Where You Going?” each adhere to this harmonious rubric; thumping club-ready beats coupled with inspiring, conscious bars.



Two personal favorites have to be the victorious, poetically-written 8th track “Foundation”; and the soulful, auto-tuned ballad of the 9th track “Devote”. Both show the splayed range of G Pea’s artistry, and add gorgeous architectural dimensions to the “Glass House” aforementioned. Truly, the masterpiece is a concept album, through and through; where the intellect of G Pea’s lyricism aims to refurnish the “Glass House” we’ve all been living in. By the end of the album, we discover that G Pea does not find this residence problematic what-so ever. The problem lies within the fact that, in the 21st century, we are all throwing stones. He hopes, with a listen to this incredible album that he can begin to remove those rocks from the palms of our hands.

A vibrant, herculean kick, guided by the gush of an 808, is the first thing you’ll hear on this titanic release, “Emotional”. It is an outstanding musical commencement, for it beautifully segues into the iridescent vocals of Sassy Vee; and the “Break Free” EP cut, in an instant, transforms into the sonic ride of a lifetime. “Emotional” is Pop at its foundation; sporting a bubbly, electronic synth that sparkles about the peripherals of piano chords and trap snares. However, the San Diego-born, New Haven-based singer, unleashes pure R&B onto the microphone. She croons, melodizes and harmonizes with the dint of her sprightly soul; squeezing a sensual, amorous jam out of the record. Her voice, truly, hearkens to R&B/Neo-Soul eras of the past, and Sassy Vee masterfully matches it with a cutting-edge sound. In little under three-minutes and thirty seconds, alongside showing she’s a upcoming talent to keep our eyes on next year, she makes certain that her “Break Free” EP is what we’ll keep our ears on for the end of this one. And “Emotional”, in all of its romantic glory, is the ideal appetizer.

For a melodic, moving joint dedicated to the ladies, on-the-verge rapper, D-Brown, has recruited the luminous vocals of Mannish Mania. In little under four-minutes, these two talented forces have combined and created the radio-ready hit, “Put A Ring On It”; and it is as infectious as a single can be. An arrangement of stark, piano chords forms an ideal bed for a bouncing trap kick, rattling hi-hats, snare, and smooth 808. Although, this is definitely a song the women can enjoy, the Gary rapper is merciless with his delivery and lyrics. A guttural, street-hardened voice shoots explicit bar after explicit bar about his significant other. Mannish Mania perfectly follows up these sentiments with a sensual hook. “I’mma put a ring on it.” he croons, under the roll of 808s, before adorning the record with his own erotic verse. Without question, “Put A Ring On It” is in mint position to win the radio and conquer the clubs. Toting a hit like this?; these two are in for an astronomical new year.

The musical range of genre-bending duo, Nilla Spice, certainly shines through on their newest smash, “Power Up”. Consisting of personas Cad Hollyhood and Tru Tyte, the record is inspired by both Hip-Hop and Electronic music. Unquestionably, there is a trap groove in the track; highlighted by its use of rolling hihats, dribbling kicks, and flavorful 808 claps. The Electronic element is derived from the power in their synths, which blossom irrefutably with color. At fifty seconds there is an awesomely synth-tinged breakdown, where the colors of EDM are vibrant. Soon, however, the energetic rapping of Nilla Spice commences, and you are reintroduced to his diverse flow. From rapid-fire spitting, to powerful chants of the hook, Nilla Spice showcases an undeniable talent for rapping. One that, combined with the track’s production, makes for a wide-reaching banger. 



Whatever crowd Nilla Splice preforms their new single, “Hate On”, for is in for an exhilarating night. They will be possessed by the voluminous rapping; and spurred to rage at their hearts’ content. That is a testament to the power that this Tampa Bay record wields; not only through its magnificent, vocal energy, but likewise its brain-throttling instrumental. To say the least, “Hate On” is musically sophisticated. It is an edgy mesh of various genres; all fusing together to create this radical, unchartered sound. The bounce is undeniably Hip-Hop; yet, the mess of synths buzzing in the foreground are distinctively native to electronic music. Around 25 seconds into the record, a funky, analog bassline slips into the mix, and the entire atmosphere is shifted. The duo allows the joint to breathe during this section, yet eventually, he crashes back into the track; as riotous and rebellious as before. Nilla is enveloped by powerful, wailing guitars during the chorus, where he chants melodiously “Hate On”. It is the model climax to the record; and if ever performed for that aforementioned crowd, will send each person into a craze. It is records like these which carve their own space into the realm of Hip-Hop; and solidify the careers of genre-bending artists. Nilla Splice and his recent banger, “Hate On”, are at the forefront of that promise.
